CPO (Close Protection Operator)/CPP (Close Personal Protection) training is something the Todd Group, formerly the Baldock Institute have been involved in since World War II.
Harry Baldock was a WWII NZ Army unarmed combat and self-defence chief instructor and his duties included training personnel to protect officers and politicians during World War II.
I have been involved as a minder and specialist close personal protection training provider and operator for over 40 years.
My former instructor Col Rex Applegate was a chief instructor with the OSS (office of strategic services) during World War II and was responsible for the setting up of specialist training facilities and training of covert operators.
He was also a close protection specialist to military officers and leading politicians during World War II including President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
My involvement with specialist close personal protection training also included next generation of military leading instructors of close protection, such as US Special Forces SGM retired Lawrence Jordan.
My CPP course was previously on the New Zealand qualification authority framework and the course was instructed through a security college in New Zealand under the instruction of Todd Group certified close personal protection instructors. This course is no longer available under NZQA.
We now deliver the course as a small group private specialist training provider conducted course as it attracts individuals that are serious about working close protection, including many that are already working in the industry. We are very fortunate through having the longest history and our own training facilities in New Zealand, combined with facilitators internationally to be able to conduct small group specialist training at the highest level.
The Todd Group are the leaders in the field of specialist close personal protection training provision in New Zealand with the longest history there.
I have personally provided training for diplomatic protection services and protection details to royal families from two different countries.
The courses we provide are conducted in New Zealand and Thailand providing a unique training experience with training exercises conducted in both countries, including a long-haul flight component.
Our private independent status as leading specialist close personal protection training providers and not being recruiters has led to individuals and groups from wide ranging countries, services and organisations undertaking our training.
Many people we have trained in close personal protection have worked and continue to work in high level close protection roles.
Our courses include all trade craft skills requirements to work as a close protection specialist and are conducted with lectures followed by hands-on training and then training exercises in New Zealand and in Thailand to ensure those on courses experience working in a country where English is not the first language and the culture is considerably different.
The courses include evasive and aggressive driving, close protection aimed and instinctive point shooting and our specialist close personal protection close combat training exclusive to the Todd Group.
From learning how to facilitate a close protection contract through to undertaking threat assessments and security surveys and writing operation orders, our CPP courses teach all aspects of the close personal protection trade craft.
The courses are of two weeks duration with training and lectures both day and night to prepare attendees for the long hours of maintaining high level of alertness required working on close protection details.
